Frenectomy

A restrictive lip and/or tongue frenulum (tie) could be the reason why your child is having feeding difficulties, speech issues and/or improper jaw development.

Our friendly and experienced dental team can answer your questions and help you determine if a frenectomy is right for you or your child.

At Aurora Kids Dentistry, we take great care to ensure that our frenectomy procedures are performed with the utmost skill and expertise. We are proud to be affiliated with respected medical and dental organizations, including the CAPD/ACDP (Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry/Academie Canadienne de Dentisterie Pediatrique), AAPD (American Association of Pediatrics) and the APA (American Dental Association). These organizations recognize the importance of frenectomies in improving oral health and overall well-being.

Frenectomy: Understanding the Procedure and Its Benefits

Are you or your child experiencing difficulty breastfeeding, speech difficulties, dental issues, or discomfort due to a tight frenulum? If so, a frenectomy may be the solution you need to alleviate these problems. At Aurora Kids Dentistry, we specialize in frenectomy procedures and can help you and your child achieve the optimal oral health you deserve.

What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a simple surgical procedure that involves the removal of the frenulum, a small piece of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the upper lip to the gum line. It is sometimes referred to as tongue tie or lip tie release. The frenulum can sometimes be tight or restrictive, causing issues with breastfeeding, speech, oral hygiene and proper jaws' development. A frenectomy can be performed quickly and easily in our office, with little to no discomfort or downtime.

Benefits of a Frenectomy

Here at our dental office, our pediatric dentists use a CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser to carry out this procedure. There are several benefits of using a laser:

  • Minimal bleeding
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Rapid procedure
  • Clean and disinfected wound
  • Suitable for newborn babies to address lip or tongue ties interfering with breastfeeding
  • Relief from daily struggles for your child

Why is a Frenectomy Needed?

A frenectomy is typically recommended for infants who have difficulty breastfeeding due to a restrictive frenulum. The procedure can be performed on infants as young as a few days old. The procedure is safe and effective, with minimal risks and a high success rate. Some patients may experience minor bleeding or discomfort after the procedure, but these symptoms typically resolve quickly with proper care.

What to Expect During a Frenectomy

Prior to the procedure, our dental team will discuss the process with you and answer any questions you may have. We will use topical or local anesthesia to ensure that you or your child are comfortable during the procedure. The frenulum will then be carefully removed using a scalpel or laser, depending on the patient's needs. The entire procedure typically takes only a few minutes to complete.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Frenectomy for Children

At Aurora Kids Dentistry, we understand that patients may have questions about the procedure. Here are answers to some of the most common questions:

Is a frenectomy painful?

What is the recovery time?

Recovery time varies, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few days. Our dental team will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery.
